All That We Gain From Falling Back

“I love Daylight Saving Time!” said no one. Ever.

Let’s face it, whether you’re springing forward or falling back, the Daylight Saving Time change disrupts our circadian rhythm. But cheer up, it’s not all doom and gloom! Believe it or not, there are perks when falling back. For example, with that extra hour of sleep, your serotonin (the brain’s happy chemical) increases, which promotes clearer thinking and elevates your mood! (I wonder if this is true for sleepers who wake up grumpy no matter how many hours of sleep they have…you know who you are!) Falling back an hour also increases our alertness, leading to increased productivity. So…we're happier, alert and more productive? I don’t know about you, but I’m excited now!

Daylight Saving Time - Falling Back

Daylight Saving Time is also the official start to Fall for many, myself included. For anyone living up North, you’ve had a taste of fall for a while now: cooler temps and the beautiful new colors – even if that means raking a bazillion leaves! For those living in the South though, fall comes a bit later (i.e. my rake is still stored in the garage).

When you’re driving home in the dark and 7pm feels like 11pm, there’s only one thing to do: toss your cool weather clothes aside, slip into your most comfortable pajamas (slippers too, of course!) and pour yourself a robust glass of Cabernet – or brew a soothing pot of Chamomile tea if that’s more your style – no judgements here! (Hmmm…I suppose that was three things to do...) Enjoy your evening in full comfort mode; you deserve this! After all, you’ve had a day full of happiness, alertness, and productivity! Now it’s time to chill, relax, and enjoy all that your household has to offer. Life is better with your PJs on; dinner tastes better, the kids are perfectly behaved, your special someone just did the dishes, and now your day is complete.

You don’t even have to feel guilty about having a soak with some luxurious bath salts or indulging in a hot shower and a new body scrub. Hell, maybe throw in a face mask for good measure! When your skin is glowing and your muscles are relaxed, you’ll be ready to slip into bed because, “Oh yeah! Bedtime is an hour earlier!” Don’t forget to set the ambiance to keep you relaxed as you wind down. Light a candle and grab your new favorite book to help quiet your mind before you truly have to turn in for the night.

Now, how do you feel about falling back this weekend? Knowing you’ll wake up happy, alert, and ready for a productive day should make the darkness a little brighter.

From our home to yours, happy falling back and sweet dreams!
